SINGAPORE: In a startling revelation, Defence Minister Chan Chun Sing announced that the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) and the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) are on high alert, actively responding to a serious cyberattack allegedly orchestrated by a Chinese-linked group targeting the nation’s critical infrastructure.

A Whole-of-Government Approach

The response involves collaboration with the Cyber Security Agency of Singapore (CSA) as part of a united effort to tackle this threat head-on. Chan's disclosure highlights the collaborative spirit of the Singaporean government in managing cybersecurity crises.

A Dangerous Adversary: UNC3886

The threat, identified as the "UNC3886" group, was brought to light by Coordinating Minister for National Security, K. Shanmugam, who characterized them as a highly sophisticated adversary capable of inflicting severe damage on national security. This group, described by cybersecurity experts from Mandiant as a "China-nexus espionage group," has gained notoriety for its attempts to infiltrate major strategic organizations worldwide.

Highlighting the balance between public awareness and operational security, Minister Josephine Teo urged the Singaporean public to stay informed about ongoing cyber threats, even while operations are active. In reaction to the allegations linking UNC3886 to China, the Chinese embassy in Singapore issued a statement expressing strong dissatisfaction, labeling the claims as unfounded.
