A Shopping Surge Ignites Price Hikes
Johor Bahru (JB) is experiencing an economic phenomenon as an increasing number of Singaporeans flock to the region for shopping sprees. Johor Chief Minister Onn Hafiz Ghazi has revealed that this influx is significantly driving up living costs.
The Cost of Living Crisis
At a recent business forum, Onn Hafiz highlighted the alarming trend: "Thousands of Singaporeans cross the Causeway every weekend for grocery shopping, and we’re observing sharp rises in food and rental prices," he said. He pointed out that iconic local dishes are becoming more costly, noting that a plate of nasi lemak with fried chicken now costs RM9 (approximately S$3) in JB, compared to just RM7 in Kuala Lumpur.
Real Estate Boom on the Horizon
The chief minister didn't stop there. He addressed the booming property market in JB, stating that some housing prices are now exceeding those in Singapore. New housing projects are seeing demand like never before, selling out rapidly.
"We need to develop more affordable housing for residents to ensure that locals are not priced out of their own city," he urged, emphasizing the importance of collaboration to foster prosperity throughout Johor and Malaysia.
Tourism Numbers Surge
In addition, the tourism scene is thriving, with over 10 million foreign visitors to Johor from January to May this year. Nearly 8 million of these visitors were from Singapore—an increase of 1.8 million compared to the same timeframe last year.
A Focus on Sustainable Growth
In response to these issues, Onn Hafiz is committed to finding solutions that will ease inflation without stifling growth. He believes that collective efforts are essential to ensure that Johor's development benefits all its residents.
