Singapore Tops Southeast Asia in Cost of Living Index
SINGAPORE: Get ready to hear the shocking news—Singapore has once again clinched the title for the highest cost of living in Southeast Asia, according to Numbeo's Current Cost of Living Index. With a staggering score of 71.1, this bustling city-state stands head and shoulders above its nearest competitor, Phuket, which limps behind with a score of just 38.1.
But that’s just the tip of the iceberg! Here’s how other major cities in the region stack up: Bangkok nudges slightly ahead at 37, followed closely by Phnom Penh at 36.9, and Manila at 34.4. Meanwhile, Pattaya registers 33.2, Kuala Lumpur at 33.1, and Chiang Mai rounds out the list with 29.5. Ho Chi Minh City, Jakarta, and Hanoi also follow with scores between 28 and 27.8. The stark differences in these figures illustrate not just the economic disparities but also the varying lifestyles across the region.
For a decade now, Singapore has dominated Numbeo’s Cost of Living Index in Southeast Asia, and the gap between its scores and those of other cities remains vast. The scores encompass critical categories such as rent, groceries, restaurant pricing, and local purchasing power. In these categories, Singapore achieved remarkable scores: 67.9 for rent, 70.9 for groceries, and 53.1 for restaurant prices, but it was the local purchasing power where Singapore truly shined with an impressive score of 93.2.
However, let’s not overlook the competition—Kuala Lumpur exceeded Singapore in local purchasing power with a score of 109.2, making it a significant player in the regional market.
Yet, it’s essential to approach these numbers with caution. Numbeo aggregates crowdsourced data regarding consumer prices, real estate costs, and quality of life metrics, and while widely used, the data is often subjective.
According to Numbeo, a family of four would require around $5,439.90 a month to live comfortably in Singapore without rent. For solo dwellers, the number dips to $1,505.70, not including rent. Now, brace yourself for this revelation: in Phuket, the cost of living, rent included, is an astonishing 59% lower than in Singapore!
Regarding specific costs, rental prices in Phuket are nearly 70% cheaper than in Singapore, while dining out can be almost half the price. Groceries hit differently too, being a whopping 36% pricier in Singapore compared to Phuket. On the flip side, local purchasing power in Phuket lagged behind significantly—almost 60% lower than Singapore.
To further put things into perspective, someone earning $12,000 a year in Singapore would only require about $4,915 in Phuket to maintain the same standard of living.
As the cost of living in Southeast Asia continues to draw attention, one thing is for sure—Singapore remains the belle of the ball, but at what cost? Stay tuned for more updates on living standards and economic trends that could affect your next travel destination or lifestyle decision!
