Singapore Reaffirms Commitment at UN Gathering
In a powerful display of international diplomacy, Singapore has once again voiced its unwavering support for a two-state solution to the longstanding Israel-Palestine conflict. Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Gan Siow Huang, represented the nation at a pivotal United Nations conference in New York on September 22.
The High-Level Conference for the Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine, co-chaired by France and Saudi Arabia, emphasized the global commitment to a two-state solution aimed at fostering a brighter future for both Israelis and Palestinians. This initiative aligns with Singapore's consistent stance on the issue, as confirmed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA).
Endorsement of the New York Declaration
Singapore proudly endorsed the New York Declaration, a key document outlining the desired peaceful resolution regarding Palestine and the implementation of the two-state solution. According to the MFA, MOS Gan’s presence at the conference underscores Singapore’s belief that diplomacy and negotiation are the only pathways to secure a lasting peace where both Israelis and Palestinians can coexist harmoniously.
Continued Support for Palestine's Recognition
In a recent parliamentary address, Foreign Affairs Minister Vivian Balakrishnan reiterated Singapore’s steadfast commitment to a negotiated two-state solution. He made it clear that recognition of the State of Palestine is contingent upon its establishment of an effective government that acknowledges Israel's right to exist and unequivocally renounces terrorism.
Dr. Balakrishnan emphasized that Singapore will actively oppose any Israeli actions that could undermine or extinguish the two-state solution, categorically rejecting any unilateral annexation of occupied territories as a blatant violation of international law.
Global Shift Towards Palestinian Statehood
The conversation around statehood is gaining traction. Just as Singapore reaffirmed its support, French President Emmanuel Macron declared France's intent to recognize Palestinian statehood in a recent summit with Saudi leaders. This follows a similar recognition from Britain, Canada, Australia, and Portugal, spurred by widespread frustration over the ongoing conflict in Gaza, and reinforces the international momentum towards achieving a viable two-state solution.
With over 140 nations already backing Palestinians' aspirations for an independent homeland, the global consensus is shifting. As nations amplify their calls for peace, Singapore remains a resolute advocate for a just and lasting resolution to a conflict that has echoed through generations.
