A Lifeline for Myanmar: S$550,000 in Aid
In a powerful show of support, the Singapore Red Cross (SRC) has dispatched a substantial new wave of humanitarian assistance, worth approximately S$550,000, to help communities devastated by the recent earthquake in Myanmar. This timely aid aims to alleviate the suffering caused by the disaster that struck on March 28.
Essential Supplies for Thousands
The latest shipment includes vital supplies such as hygiene kits for families and women, jerrycans for clean water storage, plastic mats, mosquito nets, and tarpaulins. This essential aid is projected to reach around 8,000 households, providing some relief to the local population.
Boosting Access to Clean Water and Light
In addition, SRC has sent nearly 300 water filters to hard-hit regions like Mandalay and Sagaing, helping to improve access to clean drinking water. To aid communities lacking electricity, almost 900 solar-powered lights have been delivered, shining a light of hope in these dark times.
Devastation and Challenges
The 7.7-magnitude earthquake resulted in a tragic death toll of over 3,000, with thousands more injured and many still missing. Compounding these challenges are strong rains, damaged infrastructure, and ongoing civil unrest, which continue to hinder relief efforts across the affected regions.
On-the-Ground Support Team
SRC has mobilized a dedicated team consisting of two staff members and a volunteer to Yangon. Their mission is to assess the situation and work closely with the Myanmar Red Cross and international partners to identify urgent needs and optimize support.
Strengthening Medical Aid
In a collaborative effort, SRC is also supporting the Singapore Emergency Medical Team (SGEMT) deployed to the region. They are coordinating with local volunteers and ambulances to ensure patient transfers between the SGEMT field hospital near Naypyidaw and Mandalay General Hospital.
Coordinated Efforts for Maximum Impact
In conjunction with the Changi Regional HADR Coordination Centre and the ASEAN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance, SRC continues to consolidate aid efforts to amplify the support being sent to Myanmar. Two major shipments have already been sent, which included vital resources like water filters and solar lights.
Ongoing Support Beyond Aid
Beyond delivering supplies, SRC is also fostering mental health support by establishing safe spaces at Red Cross House in Singapore. This initiative is designed for both Myanmar and Thai nationals impacted by the earthquake, providing crucial psychosocial support.
Public Support Makes a Difference
The organization's public fundraising campaign has successfully raised over S$2.7 million, with contributions from both the Singapore government and generous citizens, demonstrating the community's profound commitment to helping those in dire need.
