Stricter Protections for Genetic Data in Singapore

SINGAPORE – In a groundbreaking move, the Singaporean government is poised to strengthen proposed legislation aimed at safeguarding the genetic data of its citizens. Health Minister Ong Ye Kung announced that the Ministry of Health (MOH) will embark on extensive public consultations to clarify the uses of this sensitive hereditary information.

The Importance of Data Sharing in Healthcare

Ong emphasized the necessity for seamless healthcare delivery across various settings, stating, "To ensure effective care, patient data must be shared among healthcare providers." However, this vital data exchange raises significant cybersecurity concerns, which MOH is actively addressing through enhancements to IT infrastructure.

Innovative Health Initiatives Already Underway

At the recent 9th CHI Innovate 2025 conference, Ong highlighted ongoing initiatives in Singapore, such as the nationwide genetic screening program for familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH). Starting June 30, eligible residents can access this critical screening at subsidized rates, aiming to identify individuals at risk and mitigate the incidence of premature heart disease.

Introducing the Health Information Act

To alleviate public apprehensions surrounding data privacy, the MOH is proposing a transformative new law known as the Health Information Act. Under this legislation, patients will gain the power to restrict the sharing of their medical data among healthcare providers, addressing fears while still promoting quality care.

Navigating the Ethical Landscape of Genetic Data

Ong cautioned that as genetic data becomes more accessible, society must remain vigilant about its ethical use. The upcoming legislation will delineate clear guidelines on the applications of genetic information, ensuring it cannot be used inappropriately, such as determining employment or insurance coverage. This initiative aims to restore public confidence amidst rising technological innovations.

Harnessing AI Responsibly in Healthcare

As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to transform healthcare, Ong underscored the need for judicious use. He noted a five-year partnership between NHG Health and ST Engineering to create advanced systems that enhance patient care. Additionally, NHG Health is collaborating with Nanyang Technological University and Cornerstone Robotics to pioneer innovations in surgical robotics, focusing on safer and more cost-effective procedures.
