In a stunning turn of events, Netflix's much-anticipated second season of the global phenomenon 'Squid Game' has failed to secure any nominations for the prestigious 77th Primetime Emmy Awards.
On July 15, the Television Academy revealed its list of nominees, leaving fans shocked as 'Squid Game' was absent from major categories, including the highly coveted Outstanding Drama Series.
Despite expectations from critics and fans alike for nominations in categories such as Best Drama, acting awards, production design, visual effects, and stunt performance, Forbes reported that the series was shut out entirely, even though it still holds a respectable 83% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
In a stark contrast, the inaugural season of 'Squid Game' made history in 2022, racking up a record 14 Emmy nominations—marking the highest ever for a non-English-language series. That year, the show took home six awards, including Outstanding Directing by Hwang Dong Hyuk and Outstanding Lead Actor for Lee Jung Jae.
Analysts speculate that the key reason behind this year's snub is the perceived narrative incompleteness, as Seasons 2 and 3 tell a continuous story but were released separately. This may have affected viewers’ and the Academy's perception of the series' full artistic vision.
But don't count 'Squid Game' out just yet! Season 3, debuting in June 2025, is still in the running for next year’s Emmys, covering the eligibility window from June 1, 2024, to May 31, 2025. With fan anticipation at an all-time high, many are eager to see if this next installment can reclaim its Emmy glory.
