Major Smuggling Attempt Thwarted!
SINGAPORE – In an impressive display of vigilance, the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) recently foiled two brazen attempts to smuggle vapes and heat sticks into Singapore at Changi Airport's Terminal 4 on September 6.
Discoveries That Shocked the Officers!
In a thrilling first incident, ICA officers grew suspicious of a female Romanian traveler at around 1:45 PM. Upon conducting enhanced checks, they uncovered a shocking stash: nearly 1,200 heat sticks and two e-vaporisers! Heat sticks, which heat tobacco to create a nicotine-rich aerosol instead of burning it, have been marketed as a smoke-free alternative, but their import remains strictly regulated.
Another Attempt? You Bet!
Later that night, at 11:55 PM, another female traveler, this time a South Korean work permit holder, was also flagged for additional scrutiny. When questioned about her belongings, she claimed she had nothing to declare. Yet, ICA officers again found almost 1,200 heat sticks and two e-vaporisers hidden among her items. Clearly, the message about Singapore's strict regulations isn't getting through!
A Government-Wide War on Vaping!
Singapore's government is taking a united stance against vaping, now classified as a serious drug issue. As of September 1, new, harsher penalties are in place for anyone caught possessing, using, or purchasing vapes.
New Penalties that Pack a Punch!
Offenders can expect fines that have significantly increased: $500 for those under 18 and $700 for adults, compared to $300 and $500, respectively. Long-term pass holders who dare to reoffend may find their passes revoked after a third violation, risking deportation and a ban on re-entry into Singapore.
Conclusion: Tightening the Noose on Vaping!
With these robust measures, Singapore is sending a clear message: the nation does not tolerate violations of its strict anti-vaping laws. The ICA’s recent catches underscore the ongoing battle against illicit vape imports, keeping the country’s regulations tough and welfare a priority.
