Startling Findings on Pneumococcal Vaccinations in Hong Kong

Recent research highlights an alarming reality: both before and after hospitalization for invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD), vaccination rates among patients in Hong Kong remain disappointingly low. The Pressing Need for Vaccinations

Pneumococcal disease is a significant global health threat, especially for young children and the elderly. While pneumococcal vaccinations, particularly the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV), can ward off severe health complications, many eligible adults are not getting vaccinated. As of 2022, just 23% of at-risk adults and only 64% of those aged 65 and older had received their vaccine.

The study revealed shocking data regarding previously infected individuals. Astonishingly, nearly all unvaccinated adults who had suffered from IPD had missed chances to receive their vaccine during multiple visits to healthcare providers. Hospitals and clinics, prime venues for vaccine discussions, are failing to connect patients with the protection they need.

Examining Data Across Time Periods

Analyzing patient records from 2015 to 2024, researchers assessed vaccine uptake surrounding hospitalizations and beyond, even accounting for the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The study took a closer look at vaccination rates during baseline years, through the pandemic, and into the recovery phase, which revealed woefully consistent low rates.

Dismal Vaccination Rates Post-Discharge

Of the 5,517 patients analyzed, a mere 16.8% had received any pneumococcal vaccine before their illness, with uptake slightly improving to only 9.8% post-discharge. During key time periods, vaccination rates fluctuated minimally, showing just how many are slipping through the cracks.
