Daylight Theft at Changi Airport
In a brazen daylight theft, a man named Singh Sagar, a 37-year-old Indian national, was charged after he allegedly pilfered more than $1,800 worth of goods from multiple shops within Changi Airport's bustling Terminal 3. The astonishing theft occurred on March 23, in less than three hours, primarily in the departure transit area, raising concerns about airport security.
The Theft Spree
The spree began at WH Smith bookstore around 2 PM, where Singh reportedly snagged over $550 worth of merchandise, which included three sets of stationery and a portable power bank. But that was just the start of his audacious antics.
Singh's theft tour continued as he moved to popular stores such as The Cocoa Trees candy shop, the Discover Singapore souvenir store, the Kaboom toy store, and even Victoria’s Secret lingerie shop. Among the stolen goods were four boxes of premium chocolates estimated at $238, an assortment of jewelry, trendy T-shirts, and a designer handbag valued at $135.
Police Intervention and Charges
The Singapore Police, alerted to the criminal activity, successfully detained Singh before he could leave the country. On April 6, he was officially charged with five counts of theft and is expected to enter a guilty plea on April 25.
Related Incidents and Legal Implications
This incident marks the second robbery at Changi Airport within a short span of time. Notably, an Australian woman named Raj Varsha, 35, was charged on April 4, two years following her alleged theft of a Chanel perfume bottle worth $248 in March 2023. She evaded capture until her recent return to Singapore on March 31, 2025.
Legal experts warn that individuals convicted of theft may face serious consequences, including up to seven years of imprisonment per charge along with hefty fines. As authorities work to enhance security measures, travelers are left questioning the safety of their shopping experience at one of the world’s busiest airports.
