Gavage involves the treacherous act of inserting a metal tube down an animal's throat to deliver chemicals directly into their stomach. This widely-used technique in toxicity testing—employed on monkeys, dogs, rabbits, and rodents—has serious ethical implications, often causing extreme distress, injury, and even death.

Disturbingly, the gavage method echoes the controversial force-feeding techniques used in the production of foie gras, which has already faced bans in countries like the UK, Germany, and Australia due to animal welfare concerns. The analysis, featured in the journal ATLA (Alternatives to Laboratory Animals), meticulously reviewed 300 repeated-dose toxicity tests performed on rats under the EU's REACH chemicals regulation. Moreover, 16% of reports described distressing respiratory problems and signs of 'gavage-related reflux,' where test substances entered the lungs, resulting in symptoms such as difficulty breathing and severe distress. Currently, the EU Directive 2010/63 classifies gavage as causing only 'mild' suffering. However, the evidence clearly suggests that this classification is dangerously misleading. With a staggering 1 in 250 risk of death from gavage incidents, and 1 in 7 studies experiencing at least one death, it's incredibly irresponsible to downplay the severe harm inflicted upon these test animals.
