Groundbreaking Findings on Donkey Mental Health!
In an eye-opening revelation, a new study has brought attention to the distressing psychological condition of donkeys, suggesting many are suffering from PTSD. This alarming news has prompted the charity Safe Haven for Donkeys to implement radical changes.
A Call for Change in Egypt!
Andy Foxcroft, the chief executive of Safe Haven for Donkeys, announced a bold plan to explore a tractor-based alternative to laborious donkey tasks in Egyptian kilns. He emphasized that changing public perceptions won’t be easy, but the study provides compelling evidence to advocate for this crucial shift.
Understanding the Pain: Learned Helplessness and cPTSD
The study meticulously analyzed behavioral reports of donkeys and mules, comparing them to human mental health criteria. Researchers identified behaviors consistent with learned helplessness and complex PTSD (cPTSD), noting that a significant percentage of donkeys exhibited signs of despair.
Alarming Statistics!
About 15% of the surveyed donkeys displayed apathy or depression, with some surveys indicating a staggering 82% suffering similarly. Co-author and psychologist Theodora Capaldo described their helplessness as a form of psychological devastation, akin to human trauma, challenging the stereotype of the 'stoic donkey'.
Donkeys are Sentient Beings!
The study also revealed that over 53% of donkeys and mules had visible scars and wounds, often a result of improper harnessing and abusive treatment. An astonishing 62% were found to be underweight, highlighting the dire conditions these animals endure.
Veterinary consultant Anna Harrison remarked, "This paper validates what many of us have witnessed. These donkeys are sentient beings—they can feel pain, fear, and despair, and in the kiln environment, they have no means of escape."
