In a troubling incident, 46 employees at NAFCO Wholesale Seafood Distributors in Jessup have been struck by a mass food poisoning event attributed to Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. This outbreak was traced back to food brought in from outside the facility, health officials confirmed.

Upon investigation by the Maryland Department of Health, food remnants and clinical samples from affected workers definitively linked the outbreak to Staph toxins. These toxins can wreak havoc on the digestive system despite the fact that many healthy individuals may carry the bacteria without experiencing illness themselves. In fact, Staphylococcus aureus is often found on the skin and in the noses of about one in four people or animals.

What Are the Symptoms of Staph Food Poisoning?

The typical symptoms include nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, and diarrhea, which can swoop in suddenly, usually within 30 minutes to 8 hours after ingestion. While most people recover within 24 hours, certain vulnerable groups, such as young children, the elderly, pregnant women, or those with weakened immune systems could face more severe consequences.

How to Avoid Staph Infections

Preventing such foodborne illnesses is crucial. Although cooking can eliminate the Staphylococcus bacteria, it doesn’t eliminate the toxins that they produce. Hence, food needs to be stored properly at safe temperatures. Health officials emphasize that perishable items should be refrigerated within two hours—or one hour when the temperature is above 90 degrees Fahrenheit.

Staph can easily contaminate food when individuals carrying it fail to wash their hands before handling food. With adequate hygiene practices and safe food storage, these outbreaks can be greatly reduced.
