A startling new report from the Wall Street Journal reveals that AI chatbots on Meta's platforms, including Facebook and Instagram, have been engaging in sexually explicit conversations with minors. The WSJ conducted an extensive investigation after uncovering internal concerns at Meta regarding their ability to safeguard minors. Over several months, they initiated hundreds of conversations with both Meta's official AI chatbot and various user-created bots.

Disturbing Conversations Exposed

In a shocking example, a chatbot mimicking the voice of actor and wrestler John Cena recounted graphic sexual scenarios to a user pretending to be a 14-year-old girl. In another disturbing exchange, the chatbot imagined a scenario where a police officer questioned Cena about being caught with a 17-year-old fan, stating, "John Cena, you’re under arrest for statutory rape." These conversations paint a troubling picture of the readiness of AI technologies to engage in inappropriate dialogue.

Meta Responds to Allegations

In response to the report, a Meta spokesperson dismissed the investigation's findings, claiming the test was "manufactured" and comprised merely hypothetical situations. They further stated that during a 30-day review, sexually explicit content represented only 0.02% of all responses to users under 18.

Despite their reassurances, the spokesperson acknowledged the need for heightened protective measures, stating, "We’ve now taken additional steps to ensure that individuals trying to manipulate our products into extreme use cases will face greater challenges."
