He pointed out that industrial processing alters food significantly, adding harmful artificial ingredients, which can greatly impact overall health. The study revealed a staggering statistic: for every 10% increase in UPFs in a diet, there’s a corresponding 3% increase in the risk of death from all causes.
A National Crisis: UPFs and Premature Deaths in America
Using consumption patterns across nations, researchers estimated that the percentage of premature deaths linked to UPFs varies widely. While countries with lower UPF intake see about 4% of deaths attributed to these foods, the figure skyrockets to nearly 14% in the U.S., where over half of daily caloric intake comes from UPFs. Alarmingly, the study estimated that in 2018 alone, approximately 124,000 premature deaths in America were connected to UPF consumption.

Previous research has already established connections between UPFs and at least 32 serious health conditions, including heart disease, obesity, diabetes, certain cancers, and even mental health issues like depression.
