Overseas Votes Unveiled!
SINGAPORE: The overseas votes from the recent General Election have been revealed, and the findings are intriguing! Counted by the Elections Department Singapore (ELD) on May 15, these ballots strikingly echo local voting patterns.
A Large Pool of Voters!
Out of the 17,237 registered overseas voters, nearly 6,000 made it to the polls at one of the ten overseas stations, while thousands more opted for postal voting. ELD disclosed that 5,966 out of 8,091 voters who registered for in-person voting successfully cast their votes. Meanwhile, 7,808 of 9,146 postal voters downloaded their ballots, with 6,097 submitted in time for counting.
Total Votes: An Eye-Opening Count!
Adding these overseas ballots to the local tally from Polling Day on May 3, the total number of votes cast in GE2025 climbed to an impressive 2,438,610, albeit with 42,945 rejected votes.
Unexpected Turns in Local Voting!
While overseas voting mostly mirrored local sentiments, some surprises emerged. Notably, in Sembawang West SMC, Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) chief Chee Soon Juan secured 23 valid overseas votes compared to the People's Action Party's (PAP) Poh Li San, who received 21. However, Ms. Poh dominated overall with 53.18% of the vote.
A Stalemate in Bukit Panjang!
In another twist, the race in Bukit Panjang SMC saw both Liang Eng Hwa from PAP and SDP’s Paul Tambyah receiving an equal number of overseas votes—36 each—demonstrating a fascinating electoral dynamic.
A New Era for the Workers' Party!
The Workers' Party made notable gains in Aljunied GRC, Sengkang GRC, and Hougang SMC, outpacing the PAP with overseas votes in all three districts. Consequently, the Workers' Party emerged as the sole opposition party retained in parliament.
PAP’s Stronghold Remains!
Despite these surprises, the ruling PAP displayed formidable strength, particularly in Queenstown SMC and Tanjong Pagar GRC, where they captured 81.13% and 81.02% of the votes, respectively.
Incredible Voter Turnout!
Following the overseas vote count, the ELD reported that an impressive 92.83% of all registered electors participated in GE2025, marking a significant engagement from the electorate.
