SINGAPORE: A recent social media post has ignited a fiery debate about food prices in Singapore after a diner shared a photo of his rice meal priced at S$8.70, exclusive of coffee.
User Nicholas Wee captured the attention of many when he posted a seemingly innocuous photo of his meal to an online community on January 11, simply captioning it, “S$8.70… lol.” However, it was his follow-up comments that revealed his shock at the bill, particularly since the coffee seen in the image was not included in that price.
The post quickly garnered attention, sparking a variety of reactions. Some users were quick to defend the pricing, pointing out that meal costs can vary significantly based on location. "Meal prices vary depending on location," noted one user, suggesting that dining in high-end areas like Orchard Road could warrant such charges, with a breakdown of a typical meal costing around S$6.50 at a hawker centre.
However, the overwhelming sentiment among commenters was one of disbelief over the meal's cost. “Better bring home the plate, cutlery, glass, and even tray,” quipped one user, reflecting the sentiment that patrons expect more value for their money.
The debate did not stop there. Another diner shared his displeasure at paying S$6.50 for a meal that included only four strips of chicken, questioning whether the price was justifiable. Responses poured in as others weighed in on the matter, with a few even highlighting that the mall where the meal was purchased, VivoCity, is not considered a luxury dining destination like Orchard Road.
“This price is not acceptable. Those who say it’s okay must hardly go there,” one user commented, emphasizing that the standard of quality and quantity should reflect the price charged. Others added that with such high prices, customers should at least expect bigger portions, leading to collective outrage about the perceived decline in food affordability in Singapore.
As food prices continue to rise, Singaporeans are increasingly vocal about their dissatisfaction, sparking discussions about the economics of dining out in the city-state. Could this be a sign of a larger trend, or merely an isolated incident? One thing is certain – the conversation about food costs in Singapore is far from over.
