In a heartbreaking incident that has rocked the Taiwanese culinary scene, the families of six victims who tragically lost their lives due to food poisoning after dining at the Polam Kopitiam restaurant in Taipei will receive a staggering compensation of NT$10.8 million (approximately S$436,944). This record sum highlights the severe consequences of food safety negligence, as reported by local media.

The victims, who were aged between 39 and 66, suffered from severe illness after consuming flat rice noodles at Polam Kopitiam's Xinyi outlet between March 19 and 24, 2024. Among the deceased were three men and three women, including a 40-year-old Malaysian man. The oldest victim, Mr. Yang, was rushed to the hospital due to severe diarrhoea and chest tightness soon after dining at the restaurant. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to multiple organ failure.

Another victim, Mr. Lv, aged 39, faced a similar fate. After enjoying the restaurant's fried flat noodles and a pandan drink on March 22, he required emergency treatment on March 23. Unfortunately, he also did not survive and was later diagnosed with acute renal failure, highlighting the serious health risks involved.

In addition to the six fatalities, 27 additional patrons reported falling ill after their meals, raising urgent questions about the restaurant's food safety protocols. Early investigations revealed that the flat noodles were improperly stored at room temperature, instead of the mandated chilled conditions necessary to prevent bacterial growth.

In a significant legal response, five individuals—including the restaurant’s owner, branch manager, two chefs, and an intern—are facing charges of negligent homicide due to their roles in this devastating incident.

Under Taiwan's Crime Victim Rights Protection Act, the families of the deceased applied for government compensation, and, this week, each family received an award of NT$1.8 million. This payout marks a historic high for compensation in food safety cases, reflecting the severity of the tragedy and the urgent need for stricter regulations and enforcement in the food service industry.
