Unexpected Closure Leaves Parents in Dismay

SINGAPORE – The Early Childhood Development Agency (ECDA) has issued a stern warning to Little Paddington Preschool following significant regulatory violations during the abrupt closure of its Bishan branch.

The pre-school, which ceased operations on June 13, had only given parents a mere week’s notice before shutting down, leaving many in panic mode.

Last-Minute Notice and Relocation Chaos

Initially, parents were shocked to find out on May 30 that the center was set to close the very next day due to an unresolved lease dispute. They were informed that their little ones would be relocated to the Thomson Walk branch by June 2—a plan that clearly lacked adequate communication.

ECDA's Firm Stance on Regulatory Compliance

In a sharp statement released on July 10, the ECDA emphasized that the preschool's failure to promptly notify both parents and the agency about the potential lease non-renewal was unacceptable. According to regulations, operators are required to provide a six-month written notice prior to any closure.

Impact on Families and Future Operations

Out of the 16 children enrolled at the Bishan branch, 13 have successfully transitioned to the Thomson Walk outlet, while three opted to withdraw completely—an unfortunate consequence of the situation.

The ECDA highlighted that sudden closures like this are not just an inconvenience; they can be disruptive to both parents and children. Such actions are taken seriously, as they can affect the operator's ability to renew or obtain new licenses.

A Pattern of Sudden Closures?

Adding to the urgency of the situation, it was noted that last July, the ECDA had barred the Metis Little Campus preschool from applying for new licenses after a similar incident where parents received a mere day’s notice before the Tampines branch shut down.

As the number of sudden preschool closures continues to rise, both parents and the ECDA are left grappling with uncertainty and disruption in the lives of young children.
