In an exciting announcement, London-based tech company Sen has unveiled an ultra-high-resolution livestream from space on January 27. Dubbed SpaceTV-1, this innovative service aims to provide viewers on Earth with stunning visual experiences of our planet and the International Space Station (ISS) docking port.
"This livestream marks a significant milestone for our business," stated Charles Black, Sen's founder and CEO, during an interview with SpaceNews. "Our goal is to empower people to appreciate the beauty of our planet and raise awareness about pressing environmental issues and climate change."
Since its inception in 2007, Sen has been diligently developing the technology necessary to deliver this inspiring footage. The livestream will be funded through advertising, sponsorships, and subscriptions, allowing them to maintain a sustainable operation while connecting people worldwide with the majesty of Earth from the vantage point of space.
Black emphasized the importance of making space accessible to the general public. He noted that while many satellite companies focus on providing crucial scientific data to governments and businesses, very few offer experiences that spark inspiration or public interest. "We want to showcase the beauty of our fragile ecosystem and highlight how vital space resources are becoming for everyday life," he added.
As global dependence on space-based services grows—ranging from broadband communications to weather monitoring—Sen is committed to educating audiences on the value of space technology. The 4K livestream will be accessible for over 20 hours a day via Sen's website and YouTube, ensuring that everyone has a chance to see these breathtaking sights.
The technical setup of the livestream includes three state-of-the-art cameras hosted on the Bartolomeo platform, which is attached to the European Space Agency’s Columbus module. The cameras offer a wide variety of views, including a panoramic shot of Earth’s horizon and close-up scenes of approximately 240 kilometers by 180 kilometers, boasting a resolution of around 60 meters per pixel. One of the cameras is specifically aimed at the docking port of the ISS’s Harmony module, providing fascinating insights into space operations.
Looking ahead, Sen has ambitious plans that include sending additional cameras into orbit by 2026. Alongside the ISS cameras, the company is also capturing video imagery from a 16u cubesat, ingeniously constructed by Kongsberg NanoAvionics and launched in 2022.
