In a breathtaking turn of events, the Singapore Democratic Alliance (SDA) is set to make a pivotal announcement regarding its participation in the Punggol Group Representation Constituency (GRC) just one day before Nomination Day on May 3!

During a recent party walkabout, SDA Chairman Desmond Lim hinted at a resolution about the GRC that was supposed to come this week. However, on Sunday (April 20), he confirmed that the decision will be unveiled on Tuesday, creating a buzz among supporters and voters alike.

Mark your calendars! On the same day the SDA reveals its strategy, a new manifesto will also be launched, stirring anticipation about the party's vision and approach toward the upcoming elections. As for potential candidates? Lim kept those details under wraps, leaving the media and political enthusiasts eagerly waiting for more information.

With the recent dissolution of Parliament, political tensions have ramped up. Other parties, including the ruling People's Action Party (PAP) and the opposition Workers' Party (WP), have already showcased their manifestos and introduced new contenders, raising the stakes in this high-stakes electoral environment.

Lim was out campaigning on Pulau Ubin, accompanied by around ten party members and volunteers, including SDA secretary-general Abu Mohamed and newcomer Muhammad Faizal Mohmad, an entrepreneur. Their energetic presence underscores the party’s commitment to engaging with constituents.

Responding to inquiries about past candidates missing from recent events, Lim reassured that they remain a crucial part of the party. "When the time comes... we will come together," he affirmed, signaling unity within the ranks.

Pulau Ubin, historically part of the East Coast GRC, has been redistricted into the newly formed Pasir Ris-Changi GRC, where the SDA is now focusing its efforts. This constituency absorbed sections from the previously contested Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC, which saw unsuccessful attempts by SDA since 2006.

Interestingly, the remaining districts in Pasir Ris-Punggol GRC have transitioned into the new four-member Punggol GRC, which now includes Punggol West SMC. In the last election of 2020, the seat was narrowly secured by PAP's Sun Xueling against WP's Tan Chen Chen.

As speculation swirls regarding whether the WP will enter the Punggol race, new member Sufyan Mikhail Putra Mohd Kamil has already been spotted canvassing the area.

When asked about potential three-cornered contests in the constituency, Lim responded decisively: "We never go into other people's place... We are not the ones that initiate." This statement emphasizes the SDA's strategy of maintaining respect for established territories and their commitment to focused campaigning in Pasir Ris-Changi.

As the clock ticks down to an exciting General Election, all eyes are on the SDA. Will they rise to challenge the status quo in Punggol? Stay tuned for Tuesday’s big reveal!
