SDA Prepares for GE2025
SINGAPORE – As the countdown to the upcoming General Election (GE) in 2025 begins, the Singapore Democratic Alliance (SDA) is gearing up to contest in the Pasir Ris-Changi Group Representation Constituency (GRC). On March 23, a delegation of eight members from the opposition party embarked on a engaging walkabout in Loyang, showcasing their commitment to the local community.
With significant updates to electoral boundaries seeing parts of East Coast GRC transitioning to Pasir Ris-Changi, the SDA chairman Desmond Lim emphasized the party's dedication to serving these constituents. “We have been contesting in Pasir Ris-Punggol since 2006, and the incorporation of Changi into Pasir Ris-Changi reinforces our duty to extend our service,” Lim stated during the event.
Strategic Discussions Regarding Punggol GRC
However, the SDA's strategic intentions regarding the nearby Punggol GRC remain under discussion. The Workers’ Party (WP) has been actively engaging with residents in Punggol, which underwent significant boundary changes to create the newest GRC, leading to speculation about a multi-cornered contest. Lim confirmed that discussions between SDA’s secretary-general, Abu Mohamed, and the WP about the new boundaries are ongoing, with results expected to be shared in due course.
Community Engagement and Outreach Efforts
During the walkabout, which commenced at the Loyang Point food court, the SDA team distributed informative materials outlining their objectives aimed at enhancing job opportunities, affordable housing, reducing living costs, and improving healthcare quality. They then connected with residents door-to-door in the Loyang Rise community, previously within East Coast GRC, to foster relationships and gather feedback.
“We are here to greet the residents and express our gratitude for the opportunity to serve them,” Lim remarked, encouraging locals to support the SDA in the upcoming election. This outreach effort reflects the party’s commitment to engaging with the community on pressing issues.
Exploring Collaboration Opportunities
The SDA is not only focused on Punggol and Pasir Ris-Changi but is also exploring collaboration opportunities with other political entities. Lim expressed the party's openness to partnerships as they navigate the complexities of the electoral landscape.
Background of the SDA and Leadership Stability
Founded in 2001, the SDA currently comprises two key political factions: the Singapore Justice Party and the Singapore Malay National Organisation (PKMS), which contribute to the alliance's collective strength. The party previously included the Singapore People’s Party and National Solidarity Party, both of which departed in the late 2000s.
Among those present at the walkabout were familiar faces like Lim and Abu Mohamed, alongside newcomers such as 42-year-old businessman Muhammad Faizal Mohmad from PKMS, illustrating the party’s efforts to bring fresh perspectives into its ranks.
Lim’s decision to continue as party chairman, despite earlier intentions to retire, stemmed from urging from his colleagues, who stressed the importance of stability in leadership. He presented a vision that reflects the interests of the nation above personal ambition and reiterated that finalized candidate announcements will be made on Nomination Day.
Looking Ahead to GE2025
As discussions about candidate participation continue, Lim reassured that the absence of past candidates at recent engagements does not signify their detachment from the party. Instead, he recognized that many political figures juggle various commitments outside their political endeavors.
The stage is undeniably set for a captivating election cycle, with the SDA aiming to reestablish its presence in key constituencies, and stakeholders keenly observing the unfolding dynamics of Singapore’s political arena leading up to GE2025.
