In a shocking revelation, eight telemedicine providers are currently facing investigations by the Ministry of Health (MOH) for significant non-compliance issues identified during routine audits and enforcement actions. Senior Minister of State for Health Janil Puthucheary disclosed this concerning news during a parliamentary session on January 7.

Primary Issues Identified

Dr. Puthucheary outlined that the primary issues identified fall into two critical categories: serious lapses in clinical care and inappropriate advertising practices. Many doctors have reportedly issued prescriptions and medical certificates without conducting proper clinical assessments. Alarmingly, instances of not conducting mandatory video consultations for first-time patients have also been noted. Additionally, some advertisements have irresponsibly promoted the unnecessary use of telemedicine services, raising ethical concerns.

Enforcement Actions Taken

Among the eight, three investigations have concluded, leading to strong enforcement actions. One notable case involves the MaNaDr Clinic, which had its operating license revoked just last month due to these findings. The action taken against the remaining providers ranges from temporary suspensions to stern warnings, reflecting the varying severity of each breach.

Proactive Response from MOH

In a proactive stance, the MOH responded to the incident last October by referring 41 doctors from the MaNaDr Clinic to the Singapore Medical Council (SMC) for potential professional misconduct. The SMC is currently in the process of reviewing these cases to determine possible violations of ethical guidelines.

Moreover, the Minister highlighted alarming statistics, revealing that MOH received a total of 59 complaints related to telemedicine last year, involving over 20 licensees.
