Exciting news is on the horizon as Samsung gears up to release its highly anticipated smart glasses, developed in partnership with tech giants Google and Qualcomm. However, if you were hoping for an earlier launch, prepare to wait until late 2025, with an expected release window between July and September.
According to the South Korean newspaper Maeil Business Newspaper, referenced by Jukanlosreve and an insightful report from Wellsen XR Research, Samsung plans to produce an initial batch of 500,000 units. This strategic move aligns with Samsung's tradition of unveiling new devices at its second Unpacked event of the year, typically held in the summer, where it also showcases its latest foldable phones.
These cutting-edge smart glasses will be powered by Qualcomm's AR1 chip and feature an impressive 155mAh battery, all while weighing a lightweight 50 grams. With a 12MP camera sourced from Sony and a custom Google-developed Gemini LLM, the glasses promise a plethora of features.
Interestingly, many of these specifications seem quite similar to those found in Meta's Ray-Ban smart glasses, which also utilize the AR1 chip. While Samsung's glasses are slightly heavier than Meta's offering, they boast comparable camera and battery features.
The noteworthy difference lies in the software capabilities: Samsung's integration of Google's Gemini AI could provide enhanced functionalities such as QR code payment recognition, gesture recognition, and human recognition. In contrast, while Meta has hinted at live translation during its September conference, it doesn't quite offer the same range of features.
There are hints that Samsung may be moving towards a mixed-reality approach, as Qualcomm's CEO teased the idea of smart glasses overshadowing traditional headsets. Samsung, Google, and Qualcomm formed a triumvirate in February 2023 to work on their XR platform, with promises of devices launching as early as 2024 during the July Unpacked event.
In recent developments, a patent unearthed earlier this week suggested Samsung is not only working on smart glasses but also a VR/AR headset that could integrate with the glasses, creating a versatile mixed-reality system.
As speculation continues, tech enthusiasts are buzzing about the potential unveiling of the smart glasses during CES in January or at the much-anticipated Samsung Galaxy S25 launch, rumored for January 23. Samsung has a history of teasing products at events, making this a strong possibility.
With competition in the smart eyewear space heating up, all eyes will be on Samsung's inventive offerings that could redefine how we interact with technology. Stay tuned for more updates!
