In a recent incident that stirred public concern, the Jalur Gemilang, Malaysia's national flag, was displayed upside down. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail has urged the public not to overreact, clarifying that the act was unintentional.
"This incident should not create unnecessary fear regarding the display of our national flag," Saifuddin stated. He emphasized that the police would take action if reports indicate that the upside-down flag was raised with malicious intent under the Emblems and Names (Prevention of Improper Use) Act 1963 and the Minor Offences Act 1955.
"We need to discern whether this was an act meant to mock our patriotism or simply a harmless error. If investigations reveal a deliberate offense, legal consequences will follow. However, if it's an honest mistake, there’s no need to amplify the situation," he reminded reporters during the Sua Mesra programme hosted by the Home Ministry.
Saifuddin also highlighted the importance of displaying the Jalur Gemilang, especially as Malaysia approaches its national celebration, calling it a vital expression of patriotism that all citizens should uphold.
In another significant development, Saifuddin announced that authorities are ready to reopen the investigation into the tragic death of tahfiz student Wan Ahmad Faris Wan Abdul Rahman, who was reportedly murdered at a religious school in Kelantan back in December 2013.
"We are prepared to reassess the case and bring it back to the Attorney General’s Chambers. The police will take the necessary steps from there,” he affirmed, reiterating his commitment to justice and truth, similar to the approach taken in the case of Zara Qairina Mahathir.
