Sage Copilot Temporarily Grounded After Data Leak Incident
Sage Group plc has recently confirmed that its AI assistant, Sage Copilot, was temporarily suspended this month due to a serious glitch that exposed customer information. This incident raised alarms among users, as it involved the AI assistant revealing data from other customer accounts when asked to display recent invoices.
A source close to the situation reported to The Register that a customer encountered the issue when they requested a list of their invoices. Instead of providing only their data, Sage Copilot inadvertently included sensitive information from other users' accounts, prompting immediate action from the company.
The company characterized this breach as a “minor issue,” with officials clarifying that no data subject to GDPR regulations was compromised. "After discovering a minor issue involving a small number of customers with Sage Copilot in Sage Accounting, we briefly paused Sage Copilot," a spokesperson stated. They emphasized that while the problem displayed unrelated business information to a few customers, no invoices were actually exposed. The fix was swiftly implemented, and Sage Copilot is reportedly functioning normally once again.
The AI assistant was taken offline for several hours last Monday to thoroughly investigate and resolve the issue. Released in February 2024, Sage Copilot is promoted as a "trusted team member" designed to manage administrative and repetitive tasks in real time. It aims to automate workflows efficiently and catch potential errors, ultimately allowing businesses to focus on growth and expansion.
Moreover, Sage asserts that the security and accuracy of Sage Copilot are top priorities, integrating robust encryption, access controls, and strict compliance with data protection laws.
