Manchester United's Premier League campaign has been riddled with struggles, particularly in front of goal, casting a shadow over their Champions League aspirations.

Ruben Amorim, the manager, candidly acknowledged that his squad was simply not ready for the rigors of Europe’s elite competition this season. After enduring a rocky start at Old Trafford, Amorim guided United to a Europa League final against Tottenham Hotspur, presenting a potential gateway into the Champions League.

However, the dreams of European glory crumbled in a 1-0 defeat in a uninspiring final held in Bilbao. Now, United gears up to face League Two’s Grimsby Town in the Carabao Cup, with Amorim declaring that his team is only equipped for domestic battles this year.

"We were not prepared to compete in Europe; that was my feeling," Amorim stated. "Trying to juggle strong Champions League matches and the Premier League is beyond us right now. We need ample time to build our foundation before aiming higher in the future.”

Despite a staggering £200 million investment on players like Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo, and Benjamin Sesko, United players have yet to find the back of the net this season. Their lack of scoring was evident as they lost to Arsenal by 1-0 and could only manage an own goal in a 1-1 draw against Fulham, where Bruno Fernandes notably missed a penalty.

While Amorim might find relief in not juggling European and league commitments, it raises concerns for fringe players left on the sidelines. The rigidity of his 3-4-3 formation has kept talents like Kobbie Mainoo and Joshua Zirkzee out of the action.

However, with the match against Grimsby looming, young stars such as Ayden Heaven and Chido Obi may have their chances. Amorim hinted at potential squad rotation, stating, "We need to ensure everyone is in the mix, as we have a busy schedule ahead. They need to battle for their spots, and opportunities will arise for everyone throughout the season."

On a positive note for United fans, Noussair Mazraoui may be close to making a comeback from injury. He has been out since the pre-season draw with Leeds, but Amorim suggested that the Moroccan defender is nearing full fitness.

"He could be back next week, but we're taking it slow to avoid any setbacks," Amorim said. As United gears up to host Burnley in their next league match, the focus remains sharp as they aim to turn their fortunes around.
