Roku recently found itself in hot water after customers reacted negatively to a surprising ad test where a commercial for 'Moana 2' blared right after powering up their devices. Outraged users took to Reddit and social media, threatening to ditch their Roku devices unless the company dialed it back. The message from consumers was loud and clear: enough is enough.
Roku users are generally okay with ad banners populating their home screens as a trade-off for affordable hardware. With their signature Roku City screensaver featuring sponsored content, customers have been willing to overlook such ads for budget-friendly streaming options. However, the full-screen ad that interrupted users stirred up a storm of discontent, prompting a serious reevaluation at Roku.
Following a recent product event showcasing the latest streaming sticks, impressive TV lineup, and even adorable adoptable puppies, I caught up with Jordan Rost, Roku's head of ad marketing. Despite the focus on innovative products, it was impossible to ignore the brewing complaints about the ad experience.
Rost acknowledged the situation delicately, emphasizing that advertisers are keen to offer a positive experience without being intrusive. "Advertisers want to be part of a good experience, they don’t want to be interruptive," he noted. This reflects Roku’s commitment to incorporating user feedback for a more seamless viewing experience.
According to Rost, all ads are designed to enhance the user experience—from Roku City promotions to content-relevant ads on the home screen. Unfortunately, the 'Moana 2' experimental ad backfired, proving more annoying than beneficial, even though users had the option to skip it.
When I inquired about Roku's patents that could allow future ads to appear directly on streaming content from devices connected via HDMI, Rost clarified that the company's primary advertising focus remains on its own platform. Nevertheless, Roku is determined to push forward, aiming to develop ads that are more interactive, relevant, and—most importantly—delightful for consumers.
For those wary of these advertising shifts, the competition is fierce. Roku better tread carefully, or many may find solace in alternatives like the Apple TV 4K.
