Director Joseph Kosinski set a daunting task for his sound team behind the film “F1”: create an immersive journey that makes audiences feel as if they are actually in the race car. Traditionally, no film has been able to capture the true sounds of Formula 1 due to licensing issues. Re-recording mixer Juan Peralta emphasized the unique challenge, stating that this film aimed to bring the exhilarating feeling of speed to viewers like never before.

Star-Studded Cast and Competitive Spirit

The Apple Original Film features Brad Pitt as Sonny Hayes, a former Formula 1 driver coaxed out of retirement by Javier Bardem's character, Ruben, to mentor rookie Joshua Pearce, played by Damson Idris. Set against the backdrop of a competitive season, Ruben hopes Sonny’s return will propel their underdog team to a podium finish.

Mic Technique: Tuning Into Authentic Sounds

To capture the authentic roar of the engines, supervising sound editor Al Nelson revealed that production sound mixer Gareth John placed microphones strategically on the Formula 2 cars driven by Pitt and Idris. While these recordings provided a glimpse into the soundscape, the team knew they ultimately needed to incorporate genuine Formula 1 audio for the full experience.

In collaboration with Mercedes AMG, real race cars were engineered to accommodate film equipment, allowing Pitt and Idris to drive on actual F1 tracks. Nelson explained that using top-notch DPA microphones, similar to those in real races, enabled them to immerse the audience in a lifelike racing atmosphere.

The Quest for Perfect Sound Placement

With the risk of damaging equipment, the team took the challenge of placing microphones as close to the exhausts as possible. John described a hands-on approach, experimenting with different locations to capture what he called ‘full-fat sound’ that truly resonates with F1 enthusiasts.

The film showcases the glamorous and diverse circuit of Formula 1 racing, including venues from Silverstone to Las Vegas and culminating in Abu Dhabi. Each location is designed to reflect its own unique character and audience vibe; for instance, the energetic yet multilingual crowd in Las Vegas contrasted starkly with the silent precision of the pit lane crews.

Action Amidst Real-Life Drama

Filming on-site presented unique opportunities, such as capturing real racing incidents. John recounted a memorable scene where an actual crash involving Max Verstappen and Oscar Piastri unfolded right before their eyes, blending genuine F1 events into the narrative for heightened excitement.

The film’s electrifying essence is further enhanced by Hans Zimmer’s gripping score. Re-recording mixer Gary Rizzo detailed the fine balance they had to strike between the orchestration and the raw sounds of racing to elevate the adrenaline while keeping the emotional stakes high.
