A Milestone in Carbon Capture Technology

In an ambitious move towards environmental sustainability, Sonardyne has clinched a groundbreaking contract with the Northern Endurance Partnership (NEP) to implement essential baseline monitoring for the UK's inaugural offshore carbon capture and storage (CCS) initiative.

High-Tech Monitoring Solutions for Deep Waters

Sonardyne is set to deploy advanced seabed landers across strategic locations above the subsurface Endurance site, located a striking 145km off Teesside’s coastline. This saline aquifer will play a crucial role in encoding captured carbon dioxide (CO2) into secure storage beneath the North Sea.

The Backbone of the East Coast Cluster

The NEP is pioneering the infrastructure required to transport CO2 from various carbon capture projects in Teesside and the Humber, collectively known as the East Coast Cluster. This ambitious venture is backed by industry giants BP, Equinor, and TotalEnergies, all working to roll out the essential operations for a cleaner future.

Monitoring Set to Begin

Environmental monitoring is slated to kick off in the summer of 2026, setting the stage for a comprehensive data-gathering mission that spans two years, prior to actual CO2 transportation and storage.

Innovative Technology at Work

To ensure precise and effective monitoring, each seabed lander will be outfitted with Sonardyne’s Edge data processing application, along with battery-operated systems that enable long-term deployment. The landers will feature cutting-edge technology, including the Origin 600 ADCP, Wavefront’s passive sonar array, and various third-party sensors. This suite of tools is designed to detect minute fluctuations in water chemistry over broad areas.

Building Trust Through Monitoring

The monitoring efforts are vital for confirming the secure containment of CO2 in the reservoir. By providing accurate and transparent data, the initiative aims to reassure stakeholders and bolster public confidence in CCS as a pivotal strategy in the battle against climate change.

Sonardyne's Commitment to a Greener Future

"Being selected for such a landmark project is not only an honor but also a reflection of Sonardyne’s extensive expertise in environmental monitoring. Committed to carbon neutrality in our UK operations, we are truly passionate about taking on climate challenges," expressed Stephen Auld, Business Development Manager for Custom Projects at Sonardyne.
