Selecting the Perfect Mouse Model for HIFU Experiments

Researchers tested three specific breeds sourced from Jackson Laboratory — NSG, NSGS, and Nude mice — to find the ideal model for conducting consistent HIFU experiments. Each breed was assessed for its tumor growth potential when implanted with a human-derived PC3 prostate cancer cell line.

Impressive Results from NSG Mice!

After monitoring tumor growth over a span of 5 to 7 weeks, the results were astonishing. NSG mice demonstrated a remarkable 29% larger tumor surface area and a staggering 55% greater volume compared to NSGS mice, with Nude mice lagging even further behind, showing a 100% difference in size. Clearly, NSG mice emerged as the optimal choice for this research.

With the NSG model confirmed as superior for tumor growth, researchers proceeded to conduct HIFU ablation trials using a larger sample size of 48 NSG mice. Interestingly, comparisons of tumor surface area and volume between the initial small test group and the larger selected group showed no significant differences (p = 0.78 for surface area and p = 0.60 for volume).
