Once airborne, these proteins can spark an allergic response, but they can’t simply be 'killed' because they were never alive to begin with! Even after dust mites and other sources have left the building, their allergens may still be present, causing problems for years.

A Smarter Approach to Managing Allergens

Traditional methods of dealing with allergens—frequent vacuuming, wall washing, or bathing pets—can be a hassle and challenging to maintain. Eidem and her team proposed a simpler solution: rather than trying to eliminate these thorny proteins, why not alter their structure? Like transforming a paper origami swan into a flat sheet—if your immune system can't recognize it, you won’t have an allergic reaction!

Harnessing the Power of UV Light

Previous studies have shown that UV light can eradicate viruses and bacteria, but what about allergens? Eidem's team utilized a less intense, safer form of UV light known as UV222, which doesn’t penetrate deeply into cells. Conducting experiments in a sealed chamber filled with allergens, the researchers turned on UV222 lamps and monitored the results.

Within just 30 minutes, airborne allergen levels dropped by an impressive 20% to 25%. In some scenarios, exposure to UV light led to a staggering 61% drop in the notorious cat allergen, Fel d1! These findings suggest a more efficient way to combat allergens compared to months of cleaning.

Portable Solutions on the Horizon?

While UV222 lights are mostly available for industrial use right now, Eidem dreams of a future where portable versions of this technology could be created.
