Current methods, like the DART system, often fail to give timely warnings, alerting communities only after a tsunami is already crashing upon them. The catastrophic 2004 tsunami in Thailand, which struck a mere 14 minutes after an earthquake, left nearly 230,000 people dead, underscoring the urgent need for an improved detection system.

GREAT is uniquely designed to run in real-time without relying on set templates or assumptions, dramatically reducing the chances of false alarms that can erode public trust in warning systems.

However, the project, which began in 2013 and aims for completion by 2030, faces challenges due to a limited number of hydroacoustic stations—only 11 exist worldwide, with just four providing real-time data. This means that only tsunamis within roughly 621 miles of a station can be effectively monitored.

Dr. Usama Kadri, the project's lead, states that provided an event occurs within a thousand kilometers of a station, GREAT can assess the situation in just six minutes— with the actual analysis taking mere seconds on a standard computer. This could prove vital for coastal communities!
