This innovative advancement, the Surface Guided Radiotherapy (SGRT) system, utilizes sophisticated surface imaging to steer clear of traditional markings altogether.

Funded by the generous support of Leeds Hospitals Charity, five SGRT machines are set to enhance the treatment experience of approximately 1,800 breast cancer patients annually. Leanne Dalby, an early beneficiary of this transformative technology, expressed her relief, stating it allows her to wear summer attire without the worry of "exposing an unwanted tattoo." The 52-year-old, who recently faced her own breast cancer battle, was thrilled to learn that she could avoid the painful tattoos that her mother had received nearly two decades ago.

A Leap Forward in Radiotherapy Methods

Traditionally, radiographers placed permanent tattoos on patients to ensure precise targeting during each treatment session. Leanne’s experience resonates with many who have faced this daunting aspect of treatment. However, with SGRT, this outdated practice becomes a thing of the past.

Peter Enever, head of radiotherapy at Leeds Cancer Centre, emphasized the significant advantages of this new technology, asserting, "This is very different from traditional methods where skin marker tattoos were crucial for patient alignment. With SGRT, we eliminate that necessity, making it immensely beneficial for patients."

In an additional triumph, SGRT addresses the communication barriers that often leave certain patients at a disadvantage. Previously, relying on audio cues created challenges for individuals who are deaf. With SGRT, non-verbal guidance through light signals and real-time visual coaching ensures that every patient, regardless of ability, receives safe and effective treatment.

Enever highlighted the clinical benefits too, noting that this system also slashes treatment times, enabling swifter access for more patients in need of radiotherapy.
