Singaporeans Embrace New Travel Patterns
In a surprising move to beat the rush, around 5,300 commuters in north-eastern Singapore have altered their travel habits, opting to steer clear of the busy morning peak from January to May this year. According to the Land Transport Authority (LTA), this trend has sparked an intriguing shift in public transport usage.
The Numbers Speak: Post-Peak Preference
Of those making the switch, a notable 30% are now taking advantage of the North East Line (NEL) during the quieter post-peak hours from 8:45 AM to 9:45 AM. Meanwhile, 27% have chosen to travel before 7:15 AM, effectively dodging the hectic morning crowd altogether. Impressively, 24% of commuters are utilizing both time slots, illustrating a growing disdain for the early rush.
Diverse Transit Choices: Buses on the Rise
Approximately 7% of these commuters have opted for alternative transport, primarily switching to buses. Additionally, 12% are mixing it up by alternating between the bus and the NEL, a trend that highlights the versatility and adaptability of commuters.
Rewards for Riding Smart: The Travel Smart Journeys Initiative
To further encourage this shift, the LTA has rolled out the Travel Smart Journeys (TSJ) program, allowing commuters to earn reward points that can offset their transport fares. By tapping in at specific MRT stations either before or after the busiest hours, passengers can earn rebates worth up to a whopping 80% of their journey fare!
New Stations Added, More Benefits Expected
The program is gaining traction, and as of July 1, the Kovan MRT station has been added to the list of participating stations, which already includes popular stops like Buangkok and Hougang. Such expansions aim to maximize public transport capacity and reduce morning peak congestion.
A Bright Future for Commuters
The LTA’s initiative also encourages the use of 12 express bus services, providing additional rewards for those who opt to steer clear of the NEL during peak hours. To enjoy the benefits, commuters must engage with the program regularly, tapping in during peak times at least six days within a 30-day period.
