Researchers at the University of Messina in Italy have made a groundbreaking discovery in the world of cosmetics! They have perfected a method that utilizes deep eutectic solvents (DES) to extract oxygen heterocyclic compounds (OHCs) from citrus-scented creams. This pioneering study marks the first time DESs have been employed for this purpose in cosmetic samples.
Quick and Effective Extraction Process
The team achieved an incredible feat using high-performance liquid chromatography–photo diode array (HPLC–PDA), successfully separating and quantifying a staggering 35 OHCs—including nine coumarins, nineteen furocoumarins, and seven polymethoxyflavones—in under ten minutes!

However, not all the findings boast good news. Out of seven cream samples analyzed, two exceeded the acceptable levels of furocoumarins. Alarmingly, one product failed to disclose ‘perfume’ or ‘aroma’ on its label while containing high levels of coumarins, raising serious health concerns.
