Get Ready for a Game Changer in Heart Health!

In an exciting breakthrough for fitness enthusiasts, the National Heart Centre Singapore (NHCS) has rolled out a cutting-edge imaging test that promises to slice through the delays of traditional heart diagnosis. This innovative test, known as Exercise Cardiac Magnetic Resonance (ExCMR), is the first of its kind in Asia and aims to expedite the diagnosis of potentially life-threatening heart conditions.

What is ExCMR?

ExCMR merges state-of-the-art magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with real-time exercise to screen for heart issues during a single session. This groundbreaking method helps distinguish genuine health conditions from normal changes induced by physical activity.

How Does It Work?

The process is efficient and straightforward. Patients use a specially designed stationary bike linked to the MRI scanner, pedaling at set intervals while doctors meticulously monitor heart performance during exertion. This results in detailed images highlighting the heart's structure, function, and blood flow.

Speedy and Cost-Effective!

Traditionally, heart assessments can take weeks, requiring multiple tests and follow-ups. However, NHCS guarantees fast and accurate results in just one visit! Although this test costs slightly more than a traditional MRI (around $200 extra for subsidized patients and $500 for private patients), the benefits are immense.

Swift Decisions for Athletes!

Assistant Professor Michelle Kui from NHCS explains that this innovation allows doctors to make crucial decisions about an athlete's health much faster. If the heart is healthy, athletes can continue their competitive pursuits without worry. If a serious condition is identified, patients receive early intervention, which can be life-saving.

Impressive Results!

Studies of over 600 participants have validated ExCMR’s efficacy, reportedly reducing the need for additional tests by nearly 90%! Since its introduction in 2020, approximately 400 patients have already benefitted from this test.

Real Stories, Real Impact!

Former national footballer Adam Swandi, who faced dizziness and chest tightness during a match, was diagnosed with a serious heart condition after undergoing ExCMR. The test not only confirmed his diagnosis but also indicated that continuing competitive football could endanger his life.

Prioritizing Safety in Sports!

With tragic incidents of athletes collapsing due to cardiac events making headlines, the need for accurate assessments has never been more urgent. In recent years, several athletes have faced fatal outcomes during competitions, spurring further discussions on health and safety in sports.

The Future is Bright at NHCS!

Associate Professor Calvin Chin describes ExCMR as a "game changer" that will significantly impact how heart health is monitored in active individuals. NHCS plans to ramp up its capacity, aiming to serve 100 patients a year. They also intend to broaden the scope of ExCMR to help identify other heart conditions such as coronary artery disease.

Active individuals can now get referrals for this revolutionary test from both public and private healthcare providers. The next era of heart healthcare has arrived!
