Yet, since ammonia can also signal other health issues, scientists led by Corrado Di Natale aimed to develop a highly specific sensor that tracks not only ammonia but also other key CKD-related compounds.
How It Works: The Innovative Sensor Inside a Mask
To make the sensor user-friendly, the team incorporated it into a surgical face mask. They coated silver electrodes with a conductive polymer used in chemical sensors, enhancing it with porphyrins, which are molecules adept at detecting volatile compounds, thereby boosting sensitivity. The electrodes were then cleverly embedded within layers of a disposable medical mask, wired to an electronic readout.
Promising Results from Initial Testing
The mask was tested on 100 participants—half diagnosed with CKD and half serving as a control group. The sensors successfully identified various metabolites in breaths, and statistical analyses revealed a clear distinction between those with CKD and those without. Remarkably, the sensor accurately diagnosed CKD 84% of the time while correctly identifying non-CKD patients 88% of the time.
