A pioneering company, Pan-United, in collaboration with Nanyang Technological University (NTU), is transforming concrete waste into carbon dioxide-storing aggregates. These lightweight materials not only reduce landfill waste but also sequester CO2, with a staggering potential to capture up to 100kg of CO2 per ton of aggregate.

"This tackles two pressing issues at once: waste recycling and reducing carbon emissions," stated Pan-United’s CEO, Ken Loh. The new concrete, 15% lighter than traditional options, could reinvent coastal structures like seawalls, enhancing resilience against increasingly fierce waves.

Shell-Covered Breakwaters: Nature Meets Engineering

The $22 million grant isn’t just about concrete and breakwaters; it encompasses 14 diverse projects tackling various aspects of coastal resilience. These include smart monitoring solutions for coastal infrastructure, innovative engineering designs, and frameworks for future protective measures.

Senior Parliamentary Secretary Goh Hanyan emphasized the significance of home-grown expertise. "Adapting solutions tailored for Singapore’s conditions is crucial. We’re not just copying what works elsewhere; we’re inventing solutions that fit our unique challenges."

Research and Collaboration: Building a Sustainable Future

The Coastal Protection and Flood Resilience Institute (CFI) is at the heart of this revolutionary endeavor. With 17 ongoing research projects, experts are investigating everything from mangrove ecology to natural barriers made from plant fibers. These initiatives are essential for cultivating a new generation of coastal protection specialists.

As the symposium showcased, Assistant Professor Pearl Li Yuzhu is creating virtual models to help optimize mangrove restoration, emphasizing the dual role of mangroves as both sediment traps and vulnerable ecosystems.
