In a groundbreaking move towards combating Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia, Emirates Health Services (EHS) has launched an innovative therapy called "Synthetic Memories." This initiative harnesses cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) developed by researchers at the renowned Mayo Clinic, promising to revolutionize patient care.

AI Breakthrough in Dementia Diagnosis

The AI tool, known as State Viewer, allows healthcare specialists to swiftly identify brain patterns across nine types of dementia through a single, accessible test. Published in the prestigious journal Neurology, findings reveal that the AI is capable of accurately diagnosing dementia in 88% of cases, significantly enhancing the speed and precision of interpretations—doubling the pace and tripling the accuracy compared to traditional methods.

A Comprehensive Approach to Treatment

Launched last May in collaboration with the Mohammed bin Rashid Centre for Government Innovation and Spain's Domestic Data Streamers, the Synthetic Memories initiative aims to conduct 100 therapeutic sessions for Alzheimer's patients by the end of this year. By utilizing generative AI technologies, the therapy reconstructs lost memories, allowing patients to relive cherished moments, thereby improving both emotional well-being and cognitive function.

Pioneering Work in the UAE

At a recent Global HealthTech Exhibition, Alia Khoury, a psychologist at Al Amal Psychiatric Hospital in Dubai, presented a detailed overview of the project. She emphasized how this first-of-its-kind therapy in the region is paving the way for groundbreaking advancements in Alzheimer’s care.

Tailored Memory Reconstruction Sessions

Since its pilot launch, EHS has conducted 20 sessions wherein psychologists have guided participants in recalling memories, which are then digitally restructured using AI. With plans to ramp up to 100 sessions by year-end, Khoury noted the importance of continuous monitoring to maximize the therapy's effectiveness in enhancing the quality of life for patients and their families.

Dementia affects over 55 million people globally, with an alarming 10 million new diagnoses annually. As the most common form of dementia, Alzheimer's remains a leading cause of death worldwide. The importance of early and accurate diagnosis cannot be overstated, especially given the challenges specialists face in differentiating between various dementia types.
