A groundbreaking study recently published in *npj Digital Medicine* has harnessed smartwatch data from users over the first two years of the COVID-19 pandemic to uncover alarming indicators of long COVID among those infected with the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

The researchers boldly state, “Data from wearable devices such as smartwatches and fitness trackers provides a revolutionary way to grasp the long-term impacts of SARS-CoV-2. By delivering objective metrics regarding heart rate, physical activity, step counts, and sleep durations, these datasets allow for continuous, non-invasive, and budget-friendly health assessments.”

The research relied on the Corona Data Donation App (CDA) launched in Germany, where over 120,000 participants voluntarily contributed daily data. This wealth of information enabled researchers to monitor a range of vital signals at 15-minute intervals – before, during, and after SARS-CoV-2 infections.

Findings Reveal Higher Heart Rates and Less Activity

In a striking comparison, those who tested positive for COVID-19 displayed significant differences when measured against negative controls. Crucially, individuals who later suffered from persistent symptoms of long COVID exhibited a higher resting heart rate (an average increase of 2.37 beats per minute) and maintained a notably lower daily step count, averaging 3,030 fewer steps even three weeks prior to their COVID-19 infection.

This concerning trend of elevated resting heart rates and diminished activity persisted for nearly two weeks following their COVID infection, indicating a potential link between physical inactivity and vulnerability to long COVID. Researchers posited, “Given the known inverse relationship between resting heart rate and physical activity, these findings suggest that diminished physical fitness levels—potentially due to pre-existing health conditions—could heighten the risk of developing long-term symptoms.”

Lingering Symptoms: Fatigue and Shortness of Breath

During active infections, participants frequently reported subjective symptoms, particularly fatigue and shortness of breath, with both symptoms becoming prominent in those who went on to develop long COVID. The data revealed that 2.6% of all individuals who were SARS-CoV-2 positive experienced prolonged shortness of breath, while a troubling 10.4% suffered from long-lasting fatigue. Of notable concern, 1.8% were afflicted by both conditions.

"As we analyzed the prevalence of fatigue, shortness of breath, and their co-occurrence between SARS-CoV-2 positive and negative individuals, marked differences emerged," the authors reported. These symptoms have become widely recognized as significant, persistent aspects of post-COVID condition (PCC).

Intriguingly, individuals impacted by long COVID did showcase a return to baseline heart rates within several weeks post-infection; however, they continued to battle enduring fatigue.
