Groundbreaking research from Northwestern Medicine has unveiled a startling connection between our body clocks and the risk of developing diabetes. A recent study, published in the *Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences*, illustrates how disruptions in our muscle's circadian rhythm, especially when coupled with a poor diet, could lead us down a dangerous path toward glucose intolerance and diabetes.

Lead researcher Clara Peek, Ph.D., explains, "When our circadian rhythms are thrown off by factors like shift work, jet lag, or even just a lack of sleep, it can affect the clocks in our muscles and disrupt our metabolism. Pair that with an unhealthy diet, and we increase our chances of developing serious metabolic issues."

What is the Circadian Clock?

Our body's internal clock is a sophisticated system of proteins, known as transcription factors, that synchronize our biological processes with the external 24-hour light cycle. While previous research linked circadian rhythm disturbances to metabolic diseases, the role of the skeletal muscle clock had remained largely unexplored—until now.
