In a surprising twist in Apple's AI saga, former Siri chief John Giannandrea reportedly urged the tech giant to select Google’s Gemini chatbot instead of OpenAI’s ChatGPT for Siri's first chatbot integration last year.
Giannandrea, a former Google executive who faced a demotion during a recent leadership shake-up, expressed skepticism about ChatGPT. He believed it lacked the longevity and privacy safeguards necessary for Apple users.
Despite Giannandrea's concerns, Apple forged ahead, officially integrating ChatGPT during the WWDC 2024 and rolling it out to users by December. This new feature allows Siri to tap into ChatGPT when it hits a question it can’t answer.
Additionally, Apple is reportedly exploring collaborations with other AI platforms. Early discussions are taking place with Perplexity, an AI-driven search engine, to possibly introduce it as a ChatGPT alternative in Siri, as well as a search option in Safari.
As Apple continues to shape its AI strategy, the implications of these choices highlight a fierce competition between tech titans in the evolving landscape of artificial intelligence.
