SINGAPORE: Record-Breaking Traffic Stats
In an astonishing display of travel activity, over 543,000 individuals crossed the Singapore-Malaysia land border on September 6, as reported by the Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) on November 11. This impressive figure marks a new single-day record, coinciding with the September school holidays, which ran from August 30 to September 8.
Throughout this holiday period, the Woodlands and Tuas checkpoints witnessed more than 5 million travelers, showcasing the increasing demand for cross-border movement. However, the influx led to significant congestion, with some car travelers enduring wait times of up to three hours for immigration clearance, as traffic backed up from the Malaysian side.
Previously, the peak was set on March 28, when 510,000 travelers received clearance at the same checkpoints, emphasizing the growing trend of travel across this crucial border.
Year-End Travel Surge Ahead
Looking forward, authorities anticipate heavy traffic at land checkpoints during the upcoming year-end school holidays, scheduled from November 15 to January 1, 2025. Travelers are urged to plan ahead and expect longer waiting periods, particularly on weekends. However, to ease congestion, using cross-border bus services could be a more efficient option for many.
The ICA has reminded travelers to comply with regulations and cooperate with officers at the checkpoints. They have warned that strict action will be taken against those who fail to follow instructions or violate checkpoint rules.
Crucial Tips for Travelers
To ensure a seamless travel experience, the ICA has issued several important reminders: 1. **Passport Validity**: Ensure that your passport remains valid for at least six months before traveling. Singapore permanent residents updating their passports should confirm that their re-entry permits are transferred correctly.
2. **Notify Changes**: Long-term pass holders must inform the ICA or the Ministry of Manpower of any changes to their passport details prior to re-entering Singapore.
3. **Faster Clearance**: Those traveling by car are encouraged to utilize QR codes in place of traditional passports to expedite the immigration process.
4. **Vehicle Permit Compliance**: Foreign vehicle drivers should make sure their Vehicle Entry Permits (VEP) are current. Vehicles without valid Autopass cards, VEP approval from the Land Transport Authority (LTA), or valid insurance may be denied entry.
5. **Outstanding Fines**: Drivers should settle any outstanding fines with governmental agencies, as unresolved issues may lead to entry denial into Singapore.
6. **Queue Discipline**: Motorists are reminded to maintain order in queues to avoid congestion and ensure the safety of all drivers. Those caught cutting in line will be sent back to re-queue, a measure the ICA has implemented to maintain fair vehicle movement.
With proactive measures and appropriate planning, travelers can enjoy a smoother crossing during the bustling holiday season ahead.
