SINGAPORE: Reckless Driving Leads to Tragic Consequences
In a tragic incident that underscores the dangers of careless driving, a man was sentenced to 22 weeks in prison on Monday (Jan 13) for his reckless actions that led to the death of a 24-year-old motorcyclist on the Bukit Timah Expressway (BKE).
Accused and Charges
The accused, Ang Yixian, 42, faced a mandatory eight-year ban from driving, which will be enforced upon his release from incarceration. Ang pleaded guilty to one charge of driving without reasonable consideration for other road users, with a second similar charge taken into account during sentencing.
The Incident
The incident unfolded on November 6, 2023, around 9:45 AM, when Ang was navigating his vehicle in the third lane of the BKE heading towards the Pan Island Expressway (PIE). At that moment, the victim, along with a pillion rider, was positioned on a motorcycle in the second lane, directly ahead and to the right of Ang's car.
Investigative reports revealed that the motorcycle had been within Ang's line of sight for a minimum of three to four seconds before the crash. However, Ang failed to signal his lane change and appeared to be inattentive, resulting in a collision with the motorcycle that caused both riders to fall. In a close call, Ang narrowly avoided impacting another motorcycle on the road.
Aftermath
Following the crash, Ang stopped his vehicle and promptly called for an ambulance. The injured motorcyclist was rushed to the hospital, where he underwent emergency brain surgery. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries just three days later, on November 9, 2023.
Legal Proceedings
The circumstances surrounding the accident painted a picture of clear weather conditions, dry road surfaces, moderate traffic, and excellent visibility—all of which placed an even heavier weight on the case against Ang. The prosecutor contended that Ang’s prolonged inattention to the road was a significant contributing factor to the tragedy. They argued for a sentence of seven to eight months, emphasizing the high-risk nature of driving on an expressway and the potential for greater harm.
On the other hand, Ang's defense requested a lighter sentence of four months, arguing that while Ang's attention was lacking, he was not speeding or making abrupt lane changes.
Judicial Response
During the hearing, the judge expressed the severity of the situation, stating that a life was lost in this "unfortunate accident." He reinforced the necessity of a sentence that conveys a strong message against careless driving behaviors, which continue to endanger lives on the road.
Implications of the Case
Under Singaporean law, careless driving resulting in death carries severe consequences, including a prison sentence of up to three years, fines reaching S$10,000, or a combination of both.
This case serves as a sobering reminder of the critical importance of paying attention while driving and the devastating consequences that can arise from negligence behind the wheel. Drivers are urged to prioritize safety and remain vigilant whenever they are on the road.
