Who Are the Cyclists?

Among these cyclists, two are still minors and cannot be named under the Children and Young Persons Act, as they were only 17 at the time of the incident, which occurred in May 2024. The other four cyclists have been identified as Ahmad Noordinie Mohamed Noorshah, Muhammad Irfan Muhamad Noor, Muhaidy Marhady, and Muhammad Aliyul Qadry Mohamad Razak, all between the ages of 19 and 20.

The infamous escapade began on May 10, 2024, when this group gathered at Bukit Panjang MRT station and set off on a cycling journey that led them along Bukit Timah Road, Stevens Road, and finally into the heart of Orchard Road. One of the 17-year-olds took the initiative to film their reckless antics, which subsequently shared on TikTok by Aliyul. The footage showed stunningly audacious acts including Noordinie performing wheelies, Aliyul cycling hands-free, and the group blatantly ignoring traffic regulations by riding in multiple lanes. At one point, they even inconceivably maneuvered between stationary vehicles while the filming continued.

Legal Consequences

The excitement was short-lived when a concerned citizen tipped off the authorities about the group's dangerous cycling at around 11 PM that same night. The police swiftly responded to the situation, and all six youths ultimately admitted to violating cycling laws, with many facing multiple charges for unsafe riding.

Court Proceedings

In the court proceedings, Aliyul faced the most severe penalties, grappling with four different charges, while the 17-year-old filmmaker had three charges against him, and the remaining four youths each had two charges.

Sentencing Details

During the sentencing, probation officers recommended probation orders, which the prosecution accepted. As a result, each cyclist was handed a nine-month probation sentence that includes a curfew requiring them to be indoors from 10 PM to 6 AM, as well as between 40 and 60 hours of community service. In addition, Irfan must comply with electronic monitoring for a duration of four months, marking a stern warning due to his previous struggles with adhering to curfew conditions during the trial period.

Probation Conditions

The families of the convicted young men were required to post a bond of S$5,000 (approximately US$3,650) to ensure the youths maintain good behavior throughout their probation.
