SINGAPORE – In a bold move for the upcoming elections, Workers' Party (WP) Secretary-General Pritam Singh emphasized a commitment to listening and understanding the needs of the people in Tampines GRC before making any promises.

Singh, addressing concerns about the WP's approach to campaigning, stated that it was unnecessary to make "empty promises". Unlike the ruling People's Action Party (PAP) which has already unveiled its manifesto, the WP plans to establish a detailed constituency strategy only after thorough engagement with residents.

Reflecting on their successful governance in Aljunied and Sengkang GRCs, Singh highlighted their strong track record, evidenced by top ratings in the Ministry of National Development's town council management report for 2024. He noted, "You can’t take away the work done by those before you, just as we acknowledge the PAP's contributions in Aljunied before 2011."

During a recent visit to Kovan Market and Food Centre, Singh pointed out that the Sengkang Town Council has been proactive, submitting around 100 proposals annually for improvement projects, securing funding for many.

Fellow WP MP Gerald Giam revealed that the Aljunied-Hougang Town Council has a $2 million surplus over five years, which will be reinvested in community projects, including lift upgrades and new recreational facilities.

As they campaign in Tampines GRC, Singh and his team, including WP chairwoman Sylvia Lim and new candidates, have received an enthusiastic reception from local residents, eager for a fresh approach against the incumbent PAP team.

Addressing a rally speech by candidate Alia Mattar, who raised broader issues including the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, Singh stressed the importance of discussing serious topics beyond just everyday concerns. He stated, "Many Singaporeans are sensitive to humanitarian issues, and we approach such matters with compassion."

Despite facing criticism, Singh remains resolute: "Every vote counts, and we’re committed to serving our constituents wholeheartedly. No constituency is safe, and we aim to represent the people faithfully in Parliament."
