In a shocking incident that unfolded in Woodlands, Singapore, a pregnant woman made a life-threatening escape from her abusive boyfriend. After being choked and confined in a room, she bravely climbed out of a window, plunging from the second floor to regain her freedom.

The harrowing ordeal began when Hans Pratignyo, a 28-year-old Singapore permanent resident, allegedly choked his 25-year-old girlfriend, who was five months pregnant at the time. Authorities were alerted by concerned witnesses, leading to his quick arrest.

Pratignyo faced multiple charges, including wrongful confinement and criminal intimidation. Following a court appearance on September 15, he pleaded guilty and is awaiting a sentencing hearing scheduled for November 6. Among his charges are three additional counts that will also be part of the proceedings.

Experts determined that Pratignyo suffers from a delusional disorder, which may have contributed to his violent behavior. This mental health diagnosis led Deputy Public Prosecutor Tan Jun Ya to support an assessment report for a mandatory treatment order (MTO) instead of a standard prison sentence.

The terrifying night began with Pratignyo shutting off the air-conditioning and blocking exits before returning home with charcoal and lighters. After igniting a fire that created life-threatening smoke, he forced his girlfriend into the bathroom, leading to a struggle.

With smoke filling the room and fearing for her life, the frightened woman seized an opportunity to escape through the window. In a desperate bid for help, she fell to the ground, injuring her hip but managing to flee toward a nearby gym. Her boyfriend attempted to recapture her, but she outsmarted him.

Police arrived promptly and apprehended Pratignyo, while the victim was rushed to the hospital, enduring an 11-day recovery. As Hans awaits sentencing on bail, his future remains uncertain, with the court deciding whether mental health treatment will be part of his punishment.
