Pope Francis Urges Dialogue to End Ukraine Conflict on Christmas Day

VATICAN CITY: In a heartfelt Christmas Day message delivered from the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica, Pope Francis appealed for renewed negotiations between Ukraine and Russia, highlighting the urgent need for peace in the war that has ravaged Ukraine since Moscow's full-scale invasion two years ago, resulting in tens of thousands of casualties.

In his traditional “Urbi et Orbi” address, the pope passionately declared, “May the sound of arms be silenced in war-torn Ukraine!” He called for “the boldness needed to open the door to negotiation,” emphasizing the necessity of “gestures of dialogue and encounter, in order to achieve a just and lasting peace.”

Despite prior criticism from Ukrainian officials regarding his stance on negotiations, Pope Francis remains committed to seeking dialogue. Earlier this year, he suggested that Ukraine should have the courage of the “white flag” to negotiate, drawing backlash from Kyiv. However, recent geopolitical developments—such as the reelection of Donald Trump—have prompted President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to reconsider his position against peace talks, provided pre-war borders are restored.

Moreover, Zelenskyy recently proposed the notion of a diplomatic settlement involving a “freezing” of current battle lines and the potential deployment of foreign troops to stabilize the situation. Meanwhile, Russia continues to assert that Ukraine must abandon any aspirations to join NATO as a precondition for negotiations.

Pope Francis, now celebrating his twelfth Christmas as pope, expanded his message to encompass global conflicts, calling for an end to violence in regions including Lebanon, Mali, Mozambique, Haiti, Venezuela, and Nicaragua.

In connection to the ongoing crisis in Gaza, Pope Francis condemned the Israeli military campaign—recently described by him as “cruelty”—and repeated his calls for a ceasefire in the conflict between Israel and Hamas. He characterized the humanitarian situation in Gaza as "extremely grave" and reiterated the need for dialogue and peace.

The war in Gaza erupted following a brutal surprise attack by Hamas on southern Israeli communities on October 7, 2023, claiming the lives of approximately 1,200 people, primarily civilians. In response, Israel initiated a military campaign aimed at dismantling Hamas, resulting in staggering casualties in Gaza, with estimates of over 45,000 deaths reported, alongside widespread destruction and displacement of civilians.

As the pope opened a Holy Year for the global Catholic Church—a period of peace, forgiveness, and reflection—he urged individuals and nations alike to foster hope and work towards overcoming divisions and conflicts. This Jubilee year, which extends through January 6, 2026, is envisioned as a time to “tear down all walls of separation,” including the long-standing division of Cyprus that has persisted since 1974.
