Polygon Enters a New Era Under Valnet's Ownership

Polygon, the beloved gaming and entertainment site, has officially changed hands, now welcomed into the Valnet family. This company, which boasts a diverse portfolio of over 27 brands across gaming, entertainment, and more, sees great potential in what was once Vox Media's crown jewel.

Valnet's Vision for Polygon

In a recent conversation with Rony Arzoumanian, Valnet's head of mergers and acquisitions, it was clear: Valnet is optimistic about Polygon's future. "We’ve had our eyes on Polygon for some time now," Arzoumanian revealed, emphasizing their desire to elevate the site’s position in the gaming world. With other gaming brands like GameRant and TheGamer under their belt, Valnet is ready to enhance Polygon's offerings.

Commitment to Depth in Coverage

Arzoumanian promised that the goal is to ensure Polygon delivers the most comprehensive gaming coverage possible. While he remained tight-lipped about specific editorial plans, one thing is clear: Valnet is determined to do right by Polygon and tap into its untapped potential. He hinted at a reinvigorated team, with efforts underway to bring in top-tier talent.

A Shifting Workforce

As part of this transition, around 10 existing staff members will stay on to help guide the website through its metamorphosis. Matt Patches, previously the executive editor at Polygon, will take up the mantle temporarily. Valnet is actively on the lookout to recruit top-tier writers and editors who can bring fresh perspective and innovation to the platform.

The New Landscape of Gaming Journalism

The acquisition, however, did not come without its share of upheaval. Many longtime staff members departed or were let go, including former editor-in-chief Chris Plante. In a notable exchange, Vox Media’s group publisher, Chris Grant, expressed frustration over Valnet's communication during this change. While Arzoumanian didn’t delve into the specifics of these interactions, he underscored that Valnet primarily negotiated with Vox Media's CEO.

Preserving Legacy and Looking Ahead

On a brighter note, Valnet has assured fans and readers alike that Polygon's extensive archives will remain intact, avoiding the fate of other publications that have vanished without a trace. Importantly, Arzoumanian affirmed that there are no plans to introduce AI-generated content to Polygon, distancing themselves from trends seen in other outlets.
